What to Expect When Rafting the Sarapiqui River!

  • Scenic river journey:
    It all starts with a convenient pick-up from your hotel in La Fortuna. We'll drive through Muelle, Aguas Zarcas, and Venecia on our way to San Miguel, Sarapiquí. The drive, which takes approximately one hour, sets the stage for an exciting day.
  • Thrilling rafting experience:
    Upon reaching the river, our expert guides will provide a comprehensive briefing on rafting techniques and safety measures. In the upper section of the Sarapiqui River, known for its exhilarating Class IV rapids, you'll navigate for 8.5 miles before finishing in Class III rapids.
  • Abundant wildlife:
    Take in the lush surroundings as you paddle along the river. The riverbanks are home to exotic birds and howler monkeys, providing a rare chance to see Costa Rica's diverse wildlife.
  • Safety and guidance:
    With expert instructions and all necessary safety measures in place, our guides will ensure you feel confident and safe throughout the journey.
  • Refreshment and relaxation:
    We'll stop halfway through the adventure for a tropical fruit snack. Then, our minivan will take you to a nearby spot, where you can change into dry clothes and enjoy a typical Costa Rican lunch.

The guides, the river, the lunch were all great. The caveat is that the tour they took us on was 3 miles of river and 2 hours shorter than was promised, so we paid $90 for a $70 (max) experience. If they hadn't cut the river portion short, it would have been well worth the money. I'm not sure why we actually let them get away with this, as it was a significant breach of contract. They should h ave explained why they did it and stood by with $20 bills refunding what we overpaid. So I would say be sure to clarify up front, and hold them to it. Otherwise, a great experience!... Fantastic River Rafting Trip!

We booked this trip through Fortuna Welcome and not only did we get a great price, but it was less expensive than other travel companies I looked into. The trip was excellent and they booked it with Defasio Adventure Company. I was a little worried booking a class III-IV since my kids (teenagers ages 16 and 14) had only river rafted once before, but turns out I worried for nothing. We hit som e fun, thrilling rapids and the kids did just fine because we had a great guide- Mosis (I probably spelled his name wrong) who knew what he was doing and made us feel safe. He was very knowledgeable. Another guide, Ramel, who gave us the safety lesson and entertained us on the bus ride to the river made the trip extra fun. Half way we stopped for a break and had fruit. This was the best pineapple and watermelon I have ever had. After the trip, they take you to a cool place on the same river and we were provided lunch. The lunch was delicious. Some of the best tasting food we had on our entire Costa Rica Trip. There is nothing negative I can say about the trip other than I wish it could have lasted longer because we had so much fun. We truly enjoyed our rafting experience with your company. The guide (Daniel) was fun to be with and very professional and understanding. The river, although low, gave us all the excitement we were anticipating.
