The Story of Venado Caves
Around 1935, the locals of Venado de San Carlos heard about nearby caves, but it wasn't until 1945 that Lael Herrera stumbled upon them while hunting.
The caves received their first concrete exploration by French adventurer Robert Vergenes. He uncovered the first 350 meters, leaving behind a trove of mysteries. In 1969, the United States government launched three simultaneous exploration teams.
Today, the Venado Caves boast 10 mapped caves spanning over 2,700 meters in total. Some chambers soar up to 35 meters in height, providing ample room for explorers to get a close look and admire the limestone caves with impressive stalactites, stalagmites, and corals.

Why Choose the Venado Caves for Your Adventure
The Venado Caves offer a unique adventure, taking you into an incredible underground world suitable for both children and adults. It's an experience unlike any other, perfect for those who don't mind getting wet or muddy during exploration.
Located only about 45 minutes away from La Fortuna, San Carlos, one of the most fascinating facts about the caverns is that they were formed 15 or 20 million years ago, during the Miocene age. Initially, they were below sea level, but due to the movements of tectonic plates, they became part of the surface.
The caves have 12 chambers of various sizes. Some are narrow and low, making it common for visitors to squeeze through tight spaces, climb walls, or traverse through ancient underground rivers. Also, it's common to encounter bats, marine spiders, and fossils inside the caverns.
